India’s Most Expensive Fancy Number: HR88B8888 Fetches ₹1.17 Crore at Auction

A fancy car registration number has set a new national record, fetching a staggering ₹1.17 crore at an online auction conducted by the Haryana RTA. This price is more than double the previous record set in April of this year, when a Kerala businessman acquired the number ‘KL 07 DG 0007’ for ₹45.99 lakh. This result makes the number ‘HR88B8888’ the most expensive vehicle registration number in the country’s history.

The Haryana Transport Department conducts weekly online auctions for VIP and fancy numbers. In this week’s auction, a total of 45 applications were received for the coveted ‘HR88B8888’ number, which had a starting price of just ₹50,000. The bidding competition was intense, driving the price into crores. The auction concluded on Wednesday evening at 5 PM, with an individual car owner securing the number for ₹1.17 crore. Notably, the bid was at ₹88 lakh as late as noon on Wednesday.

The exceptional feature of the number ‘HR88B8888’ is its visual similarity to a series of eights. The capital letter ‘B’ in the series is designed to look like the numeral ‘8’, making the entire sequence appear as a continuous line of eights. This rare and highly attractive number, characterized by the repetition of the digit ‘8’, has now cemented its place as India’s most expensive registration plate.
