The Indian Railways has introduced a new framework to strictly regulate the amount of luggage passengers can carry during their journey. To address concerns regarding overcrowding, safety, and passenger convenience, officials have decided to strictly enforce baggage limits and levy additional charges on those exceeding the permitted weight. While these rules existed previously, they are now being implemented with increased rigor due to frequent complaints from travelers about blocked pathways and safety hazards.
Coach-wise Luggage Limits
Under the new guidelines, the maximum weight for free luggage varies based on the class of travel. The official limits are categorized as follows:
-
First Class AC: Up to 70 kg
-
Second Class AC: Up to 50 kg
-
Sleeper Class and 3rd AC: Up to 40 kg
-
General Compartment: Up to 35 kg
Passengers carrying weight beyond these specified limits will be required to pay excess baggage charges as per railway tariff rules.
Special Provisions for Families and Children
The Railways has provided a specific allowance for children aged between 5 and 12 years. For these young travelers, a luggage allowance of 50% of the adult limit (up to a maximum of 50 kg) is permitted. This move is seen as a relief for families traveling together. However, officials emphasized that any weight exceeding these revised limits will attract penalties. Passengers are advised to weigh their luggage before reaching the station or utilize official Parcel Services for heavier items to avoid last-minute fines.
