The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially appointed senior leader Yumnam Khemchand Singh as the leader of the legislature party in Manipur, signaling the end of nearly a year of President’s Rule. This strategic move on Tuesday marks the first major step toward restoring a local government in the state. The decision comes after months of political uncertainty and central administration, aiming to bring a fresh leadership perspective to the ethnically sensitive region.
The Chief Minister’s post had been vacant since 2025, following the resignation of N. Biren Singh. His departure was triggered by prolonged and severe ethnic violence that gripped the state, leading the central government to impose President’s Rule to maintain stability. Khemchand Singh, who has previously served as the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, is seen as a seasoned hand capable of navigating the complex socio-political landscape of the state.
The transition back to a representative government is viewed as a crucial effort to foster reconciliation and push for administrative normalcy in Manipur. Khemchand Singh’s primary challenge will be to address the lingering grievances of various ethnic groups while spearheading rebuilding efforts. With this appointment, the BJP seeks to stabilize the Northeast state and re-establish a functional democratic framework under its leadership.
