The Telangana state administration has finalized all arrangements for the upcoming Municipal Elections, ensuring a peaceful and transparent polling process. To prevent any untoward incidents, the Director General of Police (DGP) announced that massive security has been deployed across the state, with 55 border checkposts activated along the Maharashtra and Karnataka borders. Over the last 15 days, 181 flying squads have been working tirelessly, leading to the seizure of cash, liquor, and drugs worth over ₹3 crore. Additionally, the police have executed 398 non-bailable warrants and bound over 4,318 individuals, including nearly 3,000 rowdy sheeters, to maintain law and order.
A comprehensive classification of the 8,203 polling stations has been conducted to prioritize security. Out of these, 1,302 have been identified as “critically sensitive” and 1,926 as “sensitive,” where extra police forces and continuous surveillance will be maintained. The DGP emphasized that multiple departments, including Excise, Forest, CID, and ACB, are working in coordination to ensure the Model Code of Conduct is strictly followed. Heavy security will also be present at the 136 counting centers and strongrooms where the polling materials will be stored after the elections.
In a significant move to enhance transparency, the Election Commission has mandated “third-eye” surveillance not only inside the booths but also outside the polling centers. Over 100 specialized webcasting units will monitor the proceedings in real-time to prevent clashes or illegal activities. Approximately 5.24 million voters across 2,996 wards are expected to cast their votes on February 11. The DGP has assured citizens that they can exercise their right to vote without fear, as the police have learned from previous local body elections to fortify the current security infrastructure.
