The CBI has officially summoned actor-turned-politician Vijay to appear at its New Delhi headquarters on March 15, 2026. This investigation pertains to the devastating stampede that occurred on September 27, 2025, during a TVK political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, which resulted in the loss of 41 lives and left over 60 people injured. This marks the third time the central agency has called upon the TVK leader, following his previous appearances before investigators in January of this year.
The summons follows a request for an extension by the TVK leadership. Vijay was originally scheduled to appear on March 10, but his team sought a 15-day delay due to prior commitments and requested that the questioning take place in Chennai. However, the CBI has maintained its requirement for him to appear in the national capital. TVK Joint General Secretary C.T.R. Nirmalkumar confirmed the receipt of the fresh summons, noting that the party is coordinating the legal response to the ongoing federal probe.
The investigation has also extended to other political figures, with the CBI summoning DMK legislator and former minister V. Senthilbalaji for questioning on March 17. Senthilbalaji has publicly stated his intention to cooperate fully with the agency to clarify the circumstances of the tragedy. The case, which was transferred to the CBI from a Special Investigation Team (SIT) by the Supreme Court, focuses on potential lapses in crowd management, event permissions, and the accountability of the organizers during what has become one of Tamil Nadu’s deadliest political gathering disasters.
