Gujarat Assembly Sparks Row Over T20 World Cup Final Tickets: Opposition Slams Focus on Leisure Over Public Needs

The Gujarat Assembly turned into a battlefield of words as legislators debated the lack of access to tickets for the T20 World Cup final between India and New Zealand. The issue was initiated by BJP MLA Arvind Patel, who expressed frustration over being unable to secure tickets for the high-stakes match held on March 8 at the Narendra Modi Stadium. In response, a state Minister offered an assurance that the government would make specific arrangements for legislators for future high-profile sporting finals, sparking further debate on the prioritization of official resources.

Opposition parties, including the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), were quick to criticize the discussion as a waste of legislative time. Congress MLA Imran Khedawala clarified that while he celebrated the national team’s victory, not a single Congress legislator had demanded match tickets. He contrasted this with the BJP MLA’s public complaint, suggesting that the ruling party was more concerned with entertainment than state duties. Khedawala also noted that he had canceled his personal victory celebrations out of respect for the late BJP leader Govind Parmar, whose passing was observed with a minute of silence in the House.

The Aam Aadmi Party took a sharper stance, with MLA Gopal Italia questioning the ethics of discussing cricket tickets while critical public services remain in disarray. Flanked by other AAP legislators, Italia pointed out that the public pays for the Assembly’s functioning to address real issues like the shortage of hospital beds, lack of school admissions for children, and inadequate bus services for the poor. He urged the citizens of Gujarat to notice the contrast between the taxpayers’ hardships and the topics being prioritized by the ruling members in the state’s highest legislative body.
