A horrific scene unfolded in the Strait of Hormuz when the SafeSea Vishnu, a US-owned oil tanker flying the Marshall Islands flag, was targeted by Iranian forces. Utilizing an advanced underwater “suicide drone,” the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) struck the vessel near Basra, resulting in a massive explosion that illuminated the night sky like a cinematic fireball. Tragically, one Indian sailor lost his life in the strike, while 15 other crew members were successfully rescued by Iraqi authorities in a tense overnight operation.
The attack comes amid a significant escalation in the Middle East following joint military operations by the US and Israel against Iran. The Indian Embassy in Baghdad has confirmed the casualty and is in constant communication with Iraqi officials to provide medical and logistical support to the surviving Indian sailors. Beyond the SafeSea Vishnu, another vessel—the Greece-owned Zephyros—was also targeted in a similar fashion, signaling Iran’s intent to enforce its earlier threats to block the strategic Strait of Hormuz for any unauthorized vessels.
The impact of this maritime conflict is being felt globally, as the Strait of Hormuz serves as a critical artery for one-fifth of the world’s oil supply. Following the attack and Iran’s subsequent closure of the strait, global crude oil prices have surged by 40% in just two weeks, sparking fears of a severe energy crisis. While the US government has promised to deploy forces to secure safe passage for international shipping, the escalating violence suggests that a resolution to the conflict is not yet in sight.
