‘Statue of Sacrifice’: 58-Foot Landmark Unveiled in Amaravati to Honor Potti Sriramulu’s Legacy

Minister Nara Lokesh expressed immense pride during the unveiling, noting that the project fulfills a key promise made to the Arya Vysya community during his Yuva Galam padayatra. Remarkably, the monumental statue was completed in just 194 days. Standing at 58 feet tall, the bronze statue symbolizes the 58 days of Sriramulu’s heroic hunger strike in 1952. Lokesh highlighted that the naming of the monument as the “Statue of Sacrifice” serves as a permanent reminder that the identity and statehood of Telugu people were born from this selfless act.

The ceremony, led by Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan, emphasized the historical weight of Sriramulu’s struggle. Lokesh referred to him as the “Mercator of India,” a term used by historian Ramachandra Guha to describe the man who redrew the map of the nation. Beyond statehood, his contributions to social reform, particularly his fight against untouchability and for Dalit temple entry rights, were also celebrated. The government aims for this landmark to boost Amaravati’s international profile as a center of cultural and historical heritage.

Looking ahead, the state government has outlined a comprehensive plan to develop the surrounding area into a world-class memorial site. Over the next year, officials have been directed to complete a memorial garden (Smriti Vanam), a museum, an auditorium, and a skill development center. Furthermore, the government is in discussions with the Center to release a commemorative coin in honor of Potti Sriramulu, further cementing his place in national history and ensuring his life’s work continues to inspire future generations.
