Union Minister George Kurian Resigns: President Droupadi Murmu Accepts Resignation

In a significant development in national politics, Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian has officially resigned from his post. President Droupadi Murmu accepted his resignation, as confirmed by a formal statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday. Kurian’s sudden exit from the Union Council of Ministers has sparked a wave of discussions across political circles.

The primary reason behind George Kurian’s resignation is purely technical rather than political. His term as a Member of the Rajya Sabha officially concluded on June 21. According to constitutional guidelines, an individual who holds a union ministerial position without being a member of Parliament must secure a seat in either house within six months. As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership decided not to re-nominate him to the Upper House this time, he had to step down following the expiry of his parliamentary term.

Notably, George Kurian was the sole representative from the Christian community in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s council of ministers. Hailing from Kerala, the veteran leader efficiently handled the Ministry of Minority Affairs alongside key portfolios including Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying. Following his departure, the BJP leadership faces new calculations regarding minority representation in the cabinet, amidst speculation by political analysts that more ministerial adjustments may follow in the coming days.
