Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to lead a nationwide National Mass Pledge Against Drug Abuse on August 18, marking the sixth anniversary of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA). The Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment aims to involve more than 12 crore people through both physical and online participation as part of the campaign to promote a drug-free India.
A coordination meeting chaired by Joint Secretary (Drug Prevention) Sandeep Rewaji Rathod reviewed the implementation strategy for the nationwide initiative. Representatives from various ministries and departments discussed plans to mobilise government employees, students, parents, volunteers, educational institutions, public sector undertakings, defence forces, police, Central Armed Police Forces, and social and voluntary organisations to maximise participation in the pledge.
The campaign will include pledge ceremonies across government offices, educational institutions, autonomous bodies, and field organisations, with designated nodal officers coordinating participation and reporting. The initiative aims to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse, encourage responsible behaviour, support individuals affected by addiction, and inspire citizens—especially young people—to actively contribute towards building a drug-free society.
