Fake Shopping Offers: Telangana Cyber Security Bureau Warns of Online Shopping Scams

The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has warned the public about a rise in online shopping scams during the festive season, when cybercriminals exploit attractive discounts, clearance sales, and special promotional offers. Fraudsters are reportedly misusing the names of well-known e-commerce platforms by creating fake websites and sending deceptive advertisements through social media, WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, and email to lure shoppers with unrealistically low prices.

According to officials, scammers design fake websites that closely resemble genuine e-commerce platforms and advertise discounts of 70% to 90% on branded products. They use messages such as “Limited Time Sale,” “Stock Clearance,” and “Last Chance Today” to pressure customers into making advance payments. Once the payment is received, the fraudsters disappear without delivering the products, often shutting down the fake websites and contact numbers.

The bureau also cautioned that cybercriminals are increasingly using fake customer care numbers to contact victims and steal sensitive information, including bank account details, OTPs, and UPI credentials. People have been advised to shop only through official websites and verified mobile applications, avoid offers that seem too good to be true, and never share confidential banking information with unknown callers or online sources.
