Check Your Health Insurance Coverage as COVID-19 Cases Rise

With COVID-19 cases rising again in parts of India, including Andhra Pradesh, health experts are advising people to review their health insurance policies. While doctors say the current situation is not as severe as previous waves due to widespread vaccination and improved immunity, they stress that being financially prepared for medical emergencies remains important.

Most comprehensive health insurance policies now treat COVID-19 like any other illness, covering hospitalization, ICU charges, doctor’s fees, and diagnostic tests as per the policy terms. However, expenses related to home isolation—such as masks, sanitizers, pulse oximeters, vitamin supplements, and certain medicines—may only be covered if the policy includes domiciliary care benefits. Teleconsultation and home nursing services are also covered only if specifically mentioned in the policy.

Experts also advise policyholders to check whether their preferred hospitals are part of the insurer’s cashless network. They recommend reviewing the sum insured, waiting periods, exclusions, and considering a super top-up plan if existing coverage is insufficient. In addition, maintaining medical prescriptions, test reports, hospital bills, discharge summaries, and pharmacy receipts can help ensure a smooth claim process. Those relying solely on employer-provided group health insurance should also consider purchasing an individual health insurance policy for continued protection.
