Former Chief Justice of India Justice D.Y. Chandrachud is set to take up a significant role on the international legal stage. According to a report by Bar & Bench, citing the Global Arbitration Review, Justice Chandrachud will serve as an arbitrator representing Russia in a major international dispute filed by Ukraine’s state-owned Oschadbank against Russia.
Oschadbank has alleged that it lost its business operations and assets in the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions following Russia’s full-scale military action in Ukraine in 2022. The Ukrainian state-owned bank claims that the losses amount to hundreds of millions of dollars. It has sought resolution of the dispute under the 1998 Russia–Ukraine Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT).
After Russia allegedly failed to respond to a legal notice issued by Oschadbank in July 2025, the bank proceeded to initiate international arbitration proceedings. Justice Chandrachud’s appointment as an arbitrator in the case marks a notable development in international investment arbitration and comes after his tenure as India’s Chief Justice.
