Even 25 years after the September 11 attacks, the memories of the tragedy continue to haunt the United States and the world. The images of the World Trade Center towers engulfed in flames and collapsing showed the devastating scale of the attacks.
Amid the tragedy, however, one photograph captured not just the destruction but the fear and helplessness of an ordinary person caught in the chaos. The image showed a young woman covered in dust from head to toe, running to escape the devastation.
She was Marcy Borders, who later became known around the world as the “Dust Lady.” Her photograph became one of the most enduring images associated with 9/11, representing the human fear and suffering behind the historic tragedy.
