Andhra Pradesh Expands: Three New Districts Approved

New Districts Approved, Total Count Rises to 29

The Andhra Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, has formally approved the creation of three new districts, increasing the state’s total district count from 26 to 29.1 This decision follows the recommendations submitted by a dedicated Group of Ministers.2 The three new districts approved for formation are: Markapuram, Madanapalle, and Polavaram.3 The creation of these districts aims to fulfill the long-pending aspirations of the respective regional populations and enhance administrative convenience and accessibility of government services.4

Correcting Previous Reorganization and Administrative Restructuring

This latest district reorganisation is a move by the current coalition government to address what it termed the “unscientific formation” of districts by the previous regime.5 The Chief Minister stressed that the reorganisation must resolve the existing problems without creating new ones, aligning the district boundaries with the aspirations of the people and administrative efficiency.6 Furthermore, the government has also decided to create five new revenue divisions across the state, including Nakkapalli, Addanki, Peeleru (in the new Madanapalle district), Banaganapalle, and Madakasira, alongside the formation of the new Peddaharivanam mandal.7

📝 Key Details on the New Districts

The newly approved districts will be structured as follows:

  • Polavaram District: It will comprise Rampachodavaram and Chinturu revenue divisions, with Rampachodavaram serving as the district headquarters.8 The Chief Minister specifically requested a study on the inclusion of flooded mandals after the Polavaram project’s completion to ensure appropriate administrative alignment.9

  • Markapuram District: This district will be formed with Yerragondapalem, Markapuram, Kanigiri, and Giddaluru revenue divisions, addressing a long-standing regional demand.10

  • Madanapalle District: This district will consist of Madanapalle, Punganuru, and Peeleru revenue divisions.11
