World Meditation Day was celebrated on a grand scale with a record-breaking mass meditation involving over 12.1 million people from 150 countries. Led by Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, the event marked the first official global celebration after the United Nations General Assembly approved December 21st as World Meditation Day in 2024. The keynote event took place at the UN Trusteeship Council in New York, where diplomats and high-ranking officials participated in a live session that was broadcast simultaneously to participants from India to Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
During his address, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar emphasized that “meditation is not a luxury; it is a necessity.” He explained that meditation is a natural process of “letting go” and returning to our innate state of love and compassion, which is often clouded by the stresses of adult life. He cautioned against confusing meditation with “imagination” or excessive effort, stating that the secret lies in internal focus without tension. The gathering was unique not for its noise or rallies, but for its shared silence and collective stillness, uniting diverse groups including students, farmers, professionals, and even prisoners.
A significant highlight of the movement is a first-of-its-kind global study on meditation and well-being conducted by Gallup in collaboration with The Art of Living. Gallup will incorporate new questions into its World Poll to analyze how meditation correlates with emotional health and social well-being. This data-driven approach aims to address the high levels of stress and anxiety currently recorded worldwide. The findings, expected in December 2026, are anticipated to influence public policies, education, and workplace wellness programs across the globe.
