Delhi High Court Halts Deepfake Movie of Akira Nandan: A Major Win for Personality Rights

The Delhi High Court has granted substantial relief to Akira Nandan by staying the release and broadcast of a deepfake film titled ‘AI Love Story’. The movie was reportedly created using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to mimic Akira’s name, likeness, voice, and personality without his consent. Akira approached the court seeking protection of his personality and privacy rights, arguing that such unauthorized content tarnishes his reputation and misleads the public.

Presiding over the case, Justice Tushar Rao issued an interim order restraining Sambhavami Studios and other entities from creating, sharing, or publishing any deepfake content related to Akira Nandan. The court emphasized that using AI to exploit an individual’s persona without permission is a violation of their fundamental rights. This ruling follows a growing trend of celebrities approaching the judiciary to safeguard their digital identities against AI-generated misuse.

In a stern directive to social media giants, the court ordered YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) to immediately remove all links, videos, and fake accounts associated with the controversial film. Furthermore, the court has instructed these platforms to provide the IP addresses and identity details of the individuals who uploaded the content. The judiciary’s proactive stance in this case highlights the evolving legal framework required to combat the ethical and legal challenges posed by deepfake technology.
