In a surprising turn of events ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, two heavyweight leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) have announced they will not be contesting the upcoming polls. K. Annamalai, the former IPS officer who has been the aggressive face of the BJP in the state, and TTV Dhinakaran, the chief of AMMK, have both decided to step back from direct electoral battle. This strategic withdrawal appears to be a move to accommodate the seat-sharing arrangement with the AIADMK and to focus entirely on managing the coalition’s campaign across the state.
The central leadership of the BJP reportedly nudged Annamalai to step aside to facilitate a smoother alliance with Edappadi K. Palaniswami’s (EPS) AIADMK. Historically, Annamalai’s confrontational stance toward the AIADMK leadership was seen as a hurdle in reuniting the two parties. By stepping back from the contest and his previous role as State President, Annamalai is now expected to transition into a supervisory role, overseeing the campaign strategy and ensuring coordination within the alliance rather than fighting for a specific seat.
Similarly, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran officially declared his decision in a press conference held in Theni district, stating that his primary goal is to see his party cadre win seats and serve as ministers. By acknowledging EPS as the leader of the NDA in Tamil Nadu, Dhinakaran has signaled a unified front against the ruling DMK. Political analysts suggest that with the rise of Thalapathy Vijay’s TVK party threatening to split votes, the BJP-AIADMK combine is employing this “sacrifice strategy” to consolidate their strength and avoid internal friction during candidate selection.
