India to Dominate Global 6G Landscape: Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia Announces Bold Digital Roadmap

Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia made a powerful statement in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, declaring that India is transitioning from a technology follower to a global leader. He noted that while India followed the world in 4G and kept pace during the 5G era, the nation is now positioned to lead the world in 6G. Highlighting the unprecedented speed of the 5G rollout, the Minister revealed that services have reached 99.9% of the country’s districts in just 22 months, setting a new global benchmark for digital infrastructure expansion.

The scale of India’s digital transformation is backed by massive investment and adoption. Telecom service providers have poured nearly ₹4 lakh crore into infrastructure, resulting in the installation of over 5 lakh Base Transceiver Stations (BTS). Currently, 400 million citizens are utilizing 5G services—a figure the government projects will surge to 1 billion by 2030. This revolution is no longer limited to metros; rural Wi-Fi expansion is reshaping education and healthcare in villages, with Maharashtra leading the charge in hotspot deployments.

Key Achievements in India’s Digital Journey:

  • Connectivity Surge: Broadband connections have skyrocketed from a mere 60 million a decade ago to a staggering 1 billion today, reflecting the success of the Digital India initiative.

  • Global Recognition: India has climbed four slots in the Network Readiness Index 2025 (NRI 2025), now ranking 45th globally. The nation’s score improved to 54.43, signaling a robust environment for digital technology.

  • Economic Impact: The Minister emphasized that the ₹4 lakh crore investment is not just about speed but about creating a foundation for livelihoods and future-ready livelihoods for every citizen.
