In his first official remarks following the election results, BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman dedicated the party’s historic win to the people of Bangladesh and those who sacrificed their lives for the restoration of democracy. Addressing a press conference, Rahman stated that the mandate marks the end of nearly two decades of political turmoil and authoritarianism. Having returned to Dhaka in December 2025 after 17 years in exile, Rahman won decisively from both the Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6 constituencies, signaling a powerful political comeback and his transition to becoming the nation’s Prime Minister-in-waiting.
The BNP secured a massive majority by winning 209 seats in the polls held on February 12, comfortably surpassing the required threshold to form a government. Rahman emphasized that this victory restores the essence of freedom and ensures a parliamentary system that is truly accountable to the public. These elections were the first to be held since the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in July 2024. With the Awami League barred from the contest, the massive voter turnout was seen as a public endorsement of the democratic reset spearheaded by the BNP and its allies.
Looking ahead, Tarique Rahman is set to become the first male Prime Minister of Bangladesh since 1991, taking over the mantle previously held by his late mother, Khaleda Zia. Beyond the change in leadership, the country is poised for significant structural changes, as citizens also backed comprehensive constitutional reforms under the July National Charter in a simultaneous referendum. Rahman urged the nation to remain vigilant and united to protect the country’s sovereignty and prevent any future return to autocratic rule as the new government prepares to take office.
