Neglect in Adiala Jail: Imran Khan Loses 85% Vision in Right Eye Amid Allegations of Medical Malpractice

Severe Health Deterioration and Vision Loss

The amicus curiae’s report revealed that Imran Khan has lost approximately 85% of the vision in his right eye, leaving him with only 15% sight. According to the document, Khan had perfect vision (6×6) until October 2025 but began experiencing blurred and hazy sight thereafter. Despite his repeated complaints to the jail superintendent over several months, medical intervention was reportedly denied. It was only after a sudden and complete blackout in his right eye that an ophthalmologist diagnosed a blood clot (Central Retinal Vein Occlusion). The report noted that Khan appeared “deeply distressed” and was seen repeatedly wiping watery eyes during the legal meeting.

Judicial Intervention and Supreme Court Orders

On February 12, 2026, a two-member bench led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi took serious note of the findings, stating that the state has a responsibility to provide proper medical care to inmates. The court ordered the immediate formation of a medical board to conduct a comprehensive check-up of the 73-year-old former leader before a February 16 deadline. Additionally, the court directed prison authorities to allow Khan to consult his personal physicians and restore telephonic contact with his sons, who reside in the United Kingdom, acknowledging that his isolation and health are matters of urgent concern.

New Legal Challenges and Bail Petitions

Amidst the health crisis, Khan’s legal team filed a fresh petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Saturday seeking the suspension of his sentence in the Toshakhana-II case on medical grounds. The petition argues that the dual conviction in this case violates legal principles and that his current health—specifically the risk to his remaining eyesight—necessitates his release for specialized treatment. This comes as his party, PTI, and his family intensify their protests, alleging that the “criminal neglect” by the government and jail authorities is a deliberate attempt to physically break the former prime minister.
