In a unique and revolutionary bid to strengthen the public education system, the Bommakal Gram Panchayat in the Saidapur Mandal of Karimnagar district, Telangana, has introduced an unprecedented incentive. The village local body, led by Sarpanch Vemula Srikanth, has unanimously passed a resolution declaring a complete waiver on annual property taxes and tap water bills for families that enroll their children in the local government primary or high schools. This special financial relief will remain effective until the conclusion of the current elected panchayat’s tenure.
The drastic measure was prompted by a worrying decline in student strength, particularly at the local government high school, where enrollment figures plumetted to just 23 students, compared to 62 in the primary section. Fearing that the downward trend would lead to severe teacher shortages and eventual closure of the institution due to the growing preference for private schooling, the Sarpanch and six ward members convened an emergency meeting. Beyond the immediate tax exemptions, the panchayat is actively considering extending priority access to various government welfare schemes for these families in the future.
This historic initiative has received an overwhelmingly positive response both on the ground and across social media platforms, rapidly turning into a model for neighboring regions. As part of the ongoing state-wide “Badi Bata” (school enrollment drive), teachers and panchayat staff have been visiting households to promote the scheme. The strategy has yielded immediate dividends, with more than 12 students transferring from private institutions to the village government school within a short span, while several other parents have shown a keen interest in doing the same.
