An on-field altercation between Sri Lanka ‘A’ cricketer Vishen Halambage and India’s 15-year-old batting prodigy, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, has sparked widespread controversy across the cricketing community. The incident transpired in Dambulla right after the conclusion of a high-intensity India ‘A’ vs Sri Lanka ‘A’ Tri-Series match. Based on the official report submitted by match referee Pradeep Jayaprakash, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) initiated direct disciplinary measures. Since it was an ‘A’ team bilateral fixture rather than an ICC event, the SLC bypassed a standard official hearing and handed the Sri Lankan spinner a two-match ban for violating the code of conduct.
The heated drama unfolded immediately after India suffered a narrow defeat against the hosts in a tense Super Over. As a visibly disappointed Suryavanshi was heading back to the pavilion, Halambage targeted the young opener with aggressive sledging, mockingly telling him, “The match is over… go home, this is not the IPL.” The provocative taunt caused the teenager to lose his composure, prompting Suryavanshi to push the Sri Lankan player away—a physical reaction that was captured live on broadcast footage.
Additionally, the SLC slapped veteran wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella with a heavy financial penalty during the fixture, though reports clarify his fine was for excessive appealing rather than direct involvement in the post-match scuffle. Reacting to the viral controversy, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia urged the young Indian squad to block out external drama and stay fiercely focused on their tournament objectives. The Indian board ultimately gave Suryavanshi a clean chit, choosing not to take any disciplinary action against him given the severe instigation.
