Doctors at Medicover Woman & Child Hospital in Visakhapatnam, in collaboration with interventional neurovascular specialist Dr. Siva Sankar Dalai, successfully treated a premature baby weighing just 1.7 kg who was diagnosed with the rare and life-threatening Vein of Galen Malformation (VoGM). The congenital brain vascular disorder can cause severe heart failure, respiratory distress, and multiple organ complications in newborns if left untreated.
The condition was detected during the later stages of pregnancy, which had been achieved through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), allowing doctors to prepare a comprehensive treatment plan before delivery. A multidisciplinary team closely monitored the pregnancy and coordinated the baby’s care immediately after birth. Following a safe premature delivery, the infant was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for continuous monitoring and advanced medical support.
Despite intensive care, the baby’s condition worsened, developing severe high-output heart failure and requiring ventilator support. Doctors successfully carried out the specialised treatment in time, overcoming the life-threatening complication and marking a significant medical achievement in neonatal care. The successful outcome highlights the importance of early diagnosis, advanced planning, and coordinated multidisciplinary care in managing rare congenital disorders.
