Railway Linen Theft Leaves Attendants Paying the Price

The theft of bedroll items from AC coaches on Indian trains has become a growing concern, with railway attendants bearing the financial burden. While passengers are expected to leave blankets, bedsheets, pillow covers, and towels behind after their journey, some reportedly take them home, resulting in significant losses for the Indian Railways.

A railway linen attendant recently revealed that ₹300 is deducted from his salary for every missing bedsheet, causing monthly salary cuts of ₹3,000 to ₹4,000 in some cases. His comments have gone viral on social media, drawing attention to the challenges faced by staff responsible for managing railway linen.

According to a report by The Indian Express, at least 1.27 crore bedroll items went missing from AC coaches across the country between January 2022 and May 2026. The missing items include bedsheets, blankets, pillow covers, and towels, resulting in substantial financial losses for the Railways and highlighting the need for greater awareness and responsibility among passengers.
