India and Sri Lanka will begin their two-match Test series from August 15 as part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle. The series is crucial for India’s chances of reaching the WTC final. India currently sits fifth in the points table with a 48.15% win percentage, while Sri Lanka is sixth with 41.67%. India have played nine Tests so far in the current cycle, winning four, losing four and drawing one, with nine more Tests still remaining.
Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has warned the Indian team about the importance of the upcoming series. He said a 2-0 series victory over Sri Lanka would take India’s win percentage to 57.58%, significantly strengthening their position in the WTC standings. However, a 1-1 draw would provide little advantage to India in the race for the final.
Chopra also pointed out that a 0-2 whitewash against Sri Lanka could seriously damage India’s WTC campaign. In that scenario, India’s win percentage would reportedly fall to around 39%, leaving them further behind in the standings. With several crucial Tests still remaining, India will be keen to secure maximum points from the Sri Lanka series and keep their hopes of reaching the WTC final alive.
