Chicken Prices Rocket in Telangana Amid Intense Summer Heat

Chicken prices in Telangana have reached record highs, causing significant distress to consumers across the state. Over the last ten days, the price of chicken has surged by nearly ₹100 per kilogram, driven primarily by the severe heatwaves and rising temperatures currently gripping the region.

Drastic Price Hike in Hyderabad

Just a week ago, skinless chicken was available for approximately ₹240 per kg. However, current market rates in various parts of Hyderabad have climbed to between ₹350 and ₹370 per kg. Market analysts warn that if the extreme weather persists, prices could potentially breach the ₹400 per kg mark in the coming days.

Impact of Heatwaves on Poultry

The poultry industry has been hit hard by temperatures exceeding 45°C. Farm owners report that the intense heat is causing high mortality rates among birds and reducing their feed intake due to heat stress. This has resulted in a supply drop of over 50% in the markets. Additionally, increased costs for poultry feed, transportation, and the need for specialized cooling arrangements during transit have further pushed retail prices upward.

Consumers Shift to Alternatives

With chicken becoming increasingly expensive, many consumers are turning to alternatives. While mutton remains high at ₹800 to ₹1,000 per kg, demand for fish has seen an uptick. Varieties like Rohu and Catla are being sold at ₹200 per kg, while Murrel (Korra Meenu) is priced around ₹300 per kg, offering a more affordable protein source during this price surge.
