A major security breach has sent shockwaves through the United Kingdom after British intelligence officials discovered a Chinese tracking device inside an official government vehicle used by Prime Minister Keir Starmer. According to a report by The Telegraph, the hidden device was capable of transmitting location data and had been operational for nearly four years before being detected. The discovery was made during an extensive sweep of government and diplomatic vehicles conducted by intelligence and security personnel to counter foreign espionage threats.
The investigation revealed that the tracking device was embedded within an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) by a Chinese sub-supplier before the component was shipped to the vehicle manufacturer. Because the unit was completely sealed, the manufacturer installed it without any knowledge of the compromise. Former UK Minister Iain Duncan Smith confirmed the incident, noting that security forces had to meticulously dismantle the official Range Rover Sentinels piece by piece to locate the hidden spy devices. Intelligence officials believe this is not an isolated attack on the Prime Minister but part of a broader, automated strategy by China to exploit global supply chains, potentially turning any vehicle using these mass-produced parts into a tracking tool.
In the wake of this revelation, the British government is facing immense pressure from lawmakers to adopt a tougher stance against Beijing, with demands to reclassify China from a “systemic challenge” to a “systemic threat.” In response to the breach, the UK has initiated a deep security review of all technological equipment and components used across its critical national infrastructure. Meanwhile, China has strongly denied the espionage allegations. A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in London dismissed the reports as malicious rumors and false propaganda, accusing Western politicians of weaponizing national security concerns to tarnish the reputation of Chinese tech companies.
