The ongoing divorce case involving Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay and his wife, Sangeetha Svarnalingam, which has sparked intense discussion across political and cinema circles, faced another delay on Monday. The Chengalpattu Family Court postponed the crucial hearing after both parties failed to appear in person before the court. The judge subsequently fixed August 7 as the next date for the hearing, expressing dissatisfaction over the continuous delays as the petition has been pending for several months.
According to reports from the IANS news agency, only the respective legal councils representing Vijay and Sangeetha attended Monday’s court proceedings. The legal teams explained that Chief Minister Vijay could not attend physically due to major security protocols and practical execution issues associated with his public office. Consequently, his lawyers submitted an official request asking the court to permit the Chief Minister to attend future verification proceedings virtually via video conferencing frameworks rather than requiring his physical presence.
Core Structural Demands in Sangeetha’s Petition
-
Dissolution of Marriage: Sangeetha Svarnalingam filed the original divorce petition in December of last year at the Chengalpattu Family Court, citing irreconcilable differences that make continuing the marriage impossible.
-
Alimony Claims: Alongside the formal dissolution of the marital bond, the petition includes specific demands for comprehensive financial alimony and maintenance to be paid to her.
-
Residential Rights: Sangeetha has explicitly requested the court to grant her full residential rights to continue living in their shared family home located in the Neelankarai neighborhood of Chennai.
