The Andhra Pradesh Government Doctors’ Association has extended its full support to the strike launched by junior doctors of Andhra Medical College in Visakhapatnam. Junior doctors are demanding a hike in their stipend in accordance with the provisions of the 2009 government order, which reportedly provides for a revision once every two years.
Visakhapatnam Junior Doctors’ Association president Dinakar strongly criticised the government, saying that doctors had sought at least a 15% increase in the stipend, but the government’s proposal to increase it by only 3% was deeply disappointing and insulting to the medical fraternity. He said discussions held with government representatives had failed, leaving the junior doctors with no option but to continue their strike until their legitimate demands are addressed.
The doctors appealed to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and the Health Minister to intervene immediately and resolve the issue. They highlighted the round-the-clock services provided by junior doctors, often working long hours without regard to time, and urged the government to take their concerns seriously and ensure a fair resolution.
