“Women’s Political Careers Begin in Men’s Rooms”: Bihar MP Pappu Yadav’s Outrageous Remarks

In a shocking escalation of political discourse, Independent MP from Bihar, Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, has sparked a massive nationwide controversy with his derogatory comments regarding women in politics. While discussing the recent failure of the 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill (Women’s Reservation Bill) to pass in the Lok Sabha, Yadav claimed that “the political lives of women begin in the rooms of men.” He went on to allege that 90% of women in politics could not succeed without entering a male leader’s room, labeling many politicians as “vultures” and claiming that sexual harassment has become a “culture” in the political sphere.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) responded with fierce condemnation, describing the remarks as a reflection of the opposition’s “misogynistic mindset.” BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla attacked the Congress party and its allies, noting that Yadav is considered a close associate of Rahul Gandhi. Poonawalla questioned the silence of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who famously championed the “Ladki Hoon, Lad Sakti Hoon” (I am a girl, I can fight) campaign, asking why such a heinous statement against the dignity of women leaders has not met with a stronger rebuttal from the Congress leadership.

The backlash has extended beyond verbal condemnations, with calls for strict disciplinary and legal action. BJP leader Charu Pragya demanded that Yadav be suspended from Parliament and banned from contesting future elections, calling it “unfortunate” that such an individual represents the people in the highest legislative body. Taking swift note of the situation, the Bihar State Commission for Women has issued a formal notice to Pappu Yadav, seeking an explanation for his disparaging remarks. The controversy comes at a sensitive time as the debate over the implementation and timing of women’s reservations continues to polarize the political landscape.
