In a significant political development in Tamil Nadu, the Left parties (CPI and CPM) have officially announced their support for actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) to form the government. However, they have made it clear that they will not be part of the state cabinet and have declined any ministerial portfolios. Emphasizing a policy of “outside support,” the Left leaders stated that their primary focus is to ensure the formation of a stable government under TVK’s leadership.
The Left parties justified their decision by stating that their foremost priority is to prevent communal forces from gaining a foothold in the state. They described their support for TVK as a strategic move to uphold secular values and counter right-wing ideologies in Tamil Nadu. By offering support from the outside, they intend to maintain their ideological independence while ensuring that the communal agenda is effectively blocked.
Interestingly, despite backing Vijay’s party, the CPI and CPM clarified that their long-standing alliance with the DMK remains intact. They emphasized that they would continue to collaborate with the DMK on public issues and state welfare matters. This dual stance creates a unique political landscape in Tamil Nadu, as the Left seeks to balance its friendship with the DMK while facilitating a new political era under TVK.
