West Bengal politics has witnessed a massive upheaval following the Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) recent defeat in the state assembly elections. In a stunning turn of events, Jadavpur MP Saayoni Ghosh—once considered a fierce loyalist of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee—has raised the banner of revolt against the party leadership. Breaking away from the high command, Saayoni has aligned herself with a faction of 20 dissident TMC MPs who have openly rebelled in the Lok Sabha. This major political shift has shocked the electorate, particularly because Saayoni had previously predicted that Mamata Banerjee would one day become the Prime Minister of India.
The rebellion within the party’s parliamentary ranks is being led by Lok Sabha MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar. This dissident group of 20 lawmakers has formally submitted a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker, declaring their support for the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the Center. Sources indicate that Saayoni Ghosh personally coordinated with Dastidar to sign the rebel documents and has since traveled to New Delhi, where the dissenting MPs have set up camp. Adding to Mamata Banerjee’s woes, another senior MP and close confidante, Mala Roy, also made a sudden trip to the national capital to join the rebel faction, effectively fracturing the TMC’s strength in Parliament.
This dramatic U-turn by Saayoni Ghosh has caught the TMC leadership completely off guard, especially given her recent appointment as the president of the party’s youth wing. During past election campaigns, she passionately rallied under the slogan “Bengal wins only if Didi wins” and routinely launched fierce broadsides against the BJP’s policies. She had previously accused the BJP of manipulating election machinery and stealing votes to defeat the TMC in the assembly polls. Now, her sudden decision to back the very alliance she once vehemently criticized has fundamentally altered West Bengal’s political landscape and plunged the TMC into one of its deepest internal crises.
