Chicago Mass Shooting: 7 Dead and 38 Injured in Weekend Gun Violence

A horrific wave of gun violence plagued the city of Chicago, Illinois, over the weekend, leaving at least 7 people dead and roughly 38 others wounded. According to the Chicago Police Department (CPD), a series of gang-related altercations and indiscriminate mass shootings broke out across more than 20 different locations from Friday night onward. In one of the most severe incidents, a single mass shooting left 12 people injured at one site, with several victims currently hospitalized in critical condition.

The worsening law and order situation drew a fierce reaction from US President Donald Trump, who took to his social media platform to heavily criticize the city’s Democratic leadership. Trump claimed that the local administration has completely failed to curb violent crime and keep its citizens safe. In a bold warning, he signaled that the federal government is considering deploying the military or National Guard to the streets of Chicago to restore order, weed out criminal gangs, and make the city safe again.

This fresh outbreak of weekend violence has reignited intense national debates across the United States surrounding gun culture, street gangs, and federal intervention in municipal policing. While local authorities continue to search for the suspects involved in the multi-location attacks, the President’s warning of sending in federal troops has added an intense political layer to an already devastating public safety crisis.
