India and Japan on Thursday announced a series of major initiatives, including a new economic partnership framework and a defence agreement to jointly develop military hardware, following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in New Delhi. The two leaders also unveiled measures to strengthen cooperation in strategic sectors such as energy, critical technologies and supply chain resilience.
Addressing a joint press conference, Prime Minister Modi said the economies of India and Japan complement each other and are bound by strong mutual trust. He announced that both countries have prepared a joint roadmap for economic security, focusing on strengthening supply chains in strategic areas such as semiconductors, quantum technology and advanced materials. The leaders also agreed to expand collaboration in emerging technologies and innovation.
In the energy sector, the two countries launched the India-Japan Bio-Gas Initiative under which 1,000 bio-gas and organic fertiliser plants will be established across India to promote sustainability, rural development and energy security. As India and Japan prepare to celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2027, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in trade, defence, science and technology, culture and people-to-people exchanges through their Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
