Election Shock for Actor Vijay: Madras High Court Orders IT Probe Over ₹105 Crore Asset Mismatch

Discrepancies in Dual Constituency Affidavits

Thalapathy Vijay, the superstar actor and founder of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, has faced a significant legal setback just days before the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The Madras High Court has intervened following a petition regarding massive discrepancies in the asset declarations submitted for the two constituencies he is contesting. In his nomination for the Trichy East seat, Vijay declared assets totaling ₹220 crore, while his affidavit for the Perambur constituency listed his assets at just ₹115 crore. The staggering ₹105 crore difference, filed within a matter of days, has sparked a major controversy regarding the transparency of his financial disclosures.

High Court Intervention and IT Department Notice

The mismatch was brought to the court’s attention by a Chennai-based voter, V. Vignesh, who alleged that the actor failed to provide any supporting documents or explanations for the varying valuations. Taking a serious view of the matter, the Madras High Court has directed the Income Tax (IT) Department to investigate the discrepancy and submit a formal response. This development is being seen as a blow to Vijay’s political debut, as it raises questions about his accountability. Legal experts suggest that such significant inconsistencies could potentially put his nominations at risk if a valid explanation is not provided during the next hearing scheduled for next week.

Political Stakes Amidst a Three-Way Contest

This legal trouble comes at a critical time as Tamil Nadu prepares for a single-phase poll on April 23, 2026. Vijay’s entry has turned the state’s political landscape into a high-stakes three-way battle between the DMK-led alliance, the AIADMK-BJP combine, and his own TVK. By contesting from Trichy East and Perambur, Vijay is attempting to consolidate support among minority, Dalit, and fishing communities. However, political analysts believe this asset controversy could be exploited by rivals to sway undecided voters. With the results set to be announced on May 4, the outcome of the court’s inquiry into Vijay’s “₹105 crore gap” remains the most talked-about topic in the final leg of the campaign.
