Siddaramaiah or DK Shivakumar? Dilemma Intensifies Over Leadership Change in Karnataka Congress

The intense debate surrounding a potential leadership change in Karnataka has resurfaced, creating a complex political dilemma for the Congress high command. Following the 2023 assembly election victory, Siddaramaiah was initially given the Chief Minister’s seat with the rumored understanding that power would be transferred to Deputy CM DK Shivakumar after two and a half years, a milestone reached last November. While the party high command temporarily deferred the issue due to assembly elections in five other states, the resolution of the leadership puzzle in neighboring Kerala has brought Karnataka’s internal rivalry straight back to the forefront of state politics.

The political struggle between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar is expected to escalate as both factions actively pursue conflicting goals. Siddaramaiah is pushing heavily for a cabinet reorganization and filling vacant ministerial positions to consolidate his grip on the administration and secure his current position. Conversely, Shivakumar’s camp opposes a cabinet expansion under the current setup, believing it would weaken his chances for the top job. His supporters have intensified their campaign, displaying posters across the state and even in KPCC offices projecting Shivakumar as “Karnataka’s next Chief Minister” during his recent birthday celebrations.

The Congress high command faces a tough challenge as delaying the decision—previously its safest political strategy—is becoming increasingly unsustainable under continuous pressure from both sides. Shivakumar’s faction insists that the leadership honor its original power-sharing promise as a reward for his successful management during the 2023 elections, and he is reportedly willing to vacate his KPCC president post if promoted. Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah’s camp prefers postponing any leadership discussions until the conclusion of local body and Greater Bengaluru elections. Ultimately, whether the high command chooses to retain Siddaramaiah or pass the reins to DK Shivakumar, any definitive action is bound to trigger strong resistance from the opposing faction.
