Tragic Incident at Dubare Camp: Chennai Tourist Trampled to Death by Dasara Elephant

Fatal Attack During Vacation: A leisure trip turned into a horrific tragedy on Monday morning at the famous Dubare Elephant Camp in the Kodagu district of Karnataka. Juneshe (33), a tourist from Chennai, lost her life after being trampled by a seasoned Dasara elephant named Kanjan. She had arrived in Kodagu for a family vacation with her husband, who works as a software engineer in Chennai, and their young child. Her sudden and shocking demise on the spot has left the family in deep trauma and mourning.

Accident at the River Bank: The fatal incident occurred near the banks of the Kaveri River, an area where elephants are brought for their daily bathing sessions. Visitors are usually permitted to watch these activities from a close distance. While Juneshe was watching the elephants being bathed, Kanjan—an elephant with experience in the famous Mysore Dasara festivities—suddenly grew aggressive and turned on her. Bystanders and mahouts were left stunned by the animal’s unexpected outburst, as trained camp elephants are typically known to behave gently with tourists.

Safety Concerns Raised: Following the tragedy, forest department officials immediately suspended all tourist activities and temporarily closed the Dubare Elephant Camp. The incident has once again sparked a serious debate regarding tourist safety protocols at wildlife centers, particularly concerning the safe distance that must be maintained while animals are handled. Local police have registered a case and launched an investigation, while forest authorities have ordered an internal inquiry into the lapse.
