After months of delay, the Congress high command has finally orchestrated a leadership transition in Karnataka by convincing Siddaramaiah to step down. The veteran leader will be accommodated with a Rajya Sabha seat and a prominent role in national politics, paving the way for D.K. Shivakumar to take over as the new Chief Minister. Ahead of the official transition, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has reportedly issued crucial directives regarding the structure of the incoming government to ensure the party retains its political edge ahead of the 2028 Karnataka Assembly elections.
According to reliable sources, Rahul Gandhi wants the new cabinet to maintain a strong focus on social justice by offering significant representation to Dalits, OBCs, and minority communities. This structural balance is deemed vital as the party had to replace Siddaramaiah, a prominent OBC face and leader of the “AHINDA” (Dalits, Backward Classes, and Minorities) coalition, due to intense pressure from the Shivakumar faction. To avoid alienating these traditional vote banks, the high command is pushing to induct a massive pool of fresh faces, with plans to replace around 25 of the current 35 ministers and assign them to organizational duties within the party.
A major overhaul being considered is the appointment of two Deputy Chief Ministers alongside D.K. Shivakumar, with at least one position likely going to a Dalit leader. This strategic move aligns with Rahul Gandhi’s vision to empower younger leaders—drawing inspiration from the Kerala Congress model, where youth leaders with a Youth Congress background were successfully brought into the cabinet. While Siddaramaiah’s camp is strictly in favor of multiple deputies to balance internal power, Shivakumar’s loyalists are reportedly unhappy, demanding a single deputy format. Despite the internal friction, the high command has made it clear that the new cabinet must look politically balanced and appeal heavily to the younger generation of voters.
