The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has revealed that it cannot provide immediate clarity on whether veteran cricketers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia emphasized that team selection and long-term scheduling strategies are strictly internal administrative matters that cannot be discussed in a public forum. His recent statements have further fueled ongoing speculations regarding the future of these two iconic Indian batsmen in the one-day format.
Speaking to the PTI news agency during the ongoing ODI series against Afghanistan, Saikia noted that the board relies on a dedicated panel of experts to make crucial decisions for the national squad. He explained that structured discussions happen continuously among the cricket committee, national selectors, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and the support staff. Because these discussions involve sensitive tactical and strategic planning, Saikia clarified that he is not authorized to disclose them to the media, asserting that such debates must remain confined to official board meetings.
Currently, Rohit Sharma is 39 years old, while Virat Kohli is 37, and both modern-day greats have already retired from T20 and Test formats. Despite stepping away from the other formats, reports suggest that both players remain keen to continue in ODI cricket with their eyes set on the 2027 World Cup marquee event. While Kohli remains highly positive due to his exceptional fitness levels, Rohit’s recurring injury concerns have raised slight alarms, leaving cricket enthusiasts worldwide anxious to see how the BCCI will navigate their selection transition.
