Trump-Meloni ‘Photo’ Row Triggers Diplomatic Crisis: Italian Foreign Minister Cancels US Visit in Protest!

A fierce war of words has broken out between US President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, sparking a severe diplomatic standoff. The controversy erupted following Trump’s recent remarks claiming that Meloni had desperately pleaded with him for a photograph during the recent G7 Summit held in France. The Italian government has reacted with immense outrage to these statements, condemning them as a direct insult to the nation and prompting its Foreign Minister to cancel an upcoming official trip to the United States.

The friction intensified after Trump’s controversial interview with Italy’s La7 television channel. Discussing the encounter, Trump stated, “She wanted a picture with me so badly; she practically begged for it. Honestly, I didn’t even need to speak with her, but I posed for the photo out of pity.” Meloni swiftly issued a firm rebuttal on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), categorically dismissing Trump’s narrative as entirely fabricated. She asserted that neither she nor her country would ever beg anyone, expressing astonishment at how Trump treats traditional allies inappropriately while maintaining a softer tone toward global adversaries.

The Italian administration has taken a stern institutional stance against the US President’s remarks, branding them deeply offensive to the dignity of the entire country. In direct retaliation, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani canceled his scheduled diplomatic visit to the United States, which was set for June 21-22. Other high-ranking Italian officials, including Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, have also openly blasted Trump’s behavior, indicating a deepening rift in US-Italy relations that could impact broader transatlantic cooperation.
