In an unprecedented move for Indian cricket, teenage batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will use a separate dressing room from his senior teammates during India’s upcoming five-match T20I series in England, which kicks off in Durham on July 1. This special arrangement is strictly required to comply with the mandatory under-16 child safeguarding policies enforced by both the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) “Safe Hands” framework. While the young left-hander is permitted to enter the main team dugout and dressing area for strategy meetings, tactical discussions, and match-day briefings, he must use a designated separate space to change at all five English venues. The Cricket Regulator and local County Safeguarding Officers are actively conducting risk assessments alongside the Indian Team Liaison Officer (TLO) to ensure these protective environments are seamlessly managed throughout the United Kingdom tour.
To provide additional support and care, Sooryavanshi’s parents have been permitted to accompany him throughout the tour and reside in the official team hotels—a significant departure from standard team protocols granted exclusively due to his minor status. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia previously announced that the Indian cricket board will fully sponsor all travel and accommodation expenses for the player’s parents. Similar strict privacy rules are a staple in European football for underage phenoms, but this marks a first for the touring Indian senior setup. Should Sooryavanshi make his international debut on this UK tour, he will officially break the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record (16 years, 205 days) to become the youngest men’s international cricketer to debut for India. It remains unconfirmed if these specific rules will be implemented early during India’s two-match T20I series against Ireland in Belfast, starting this Friday.
