The Andhra Pradesh Medical and Health Department has issued important guidelines regarding the working hours and leave rules for postgraduate (PG) medical students. Director of Medical Education (DME) Dr. Vishnuvardhan clarified that PG doctors should not be made to work continuously for more than 24 hours. He directed all government medical colleges and teaching hospitals to strictly implement the previously issued orders. PG doctors who perform night duties must be given a mandatory day off the following day, while one full day of leave must also be provided every week. The DME warned that action would be taken against medical college principals and hospital superintendents who fail to implement these rules.
The department has also directed medical institutions to conduct special programmes aimed at reducing the workload and mental stress faced by PG medical students. Regular counselling, time-management and stress-management programmes should be organised to support students and help them manage the demanding nature of medical training. The move is aimed at promoting a healthier and more balanced working environment for postgraduate doctors.
The authorities have also clarified the leave entitlements for PG medical students. Each student will be eligible for 20 days of paid casual leave and five days of academic leave every year. In addition, students must be provided with 52 weekly holidays during the year. The new guidelines are expected to provide PG doctors with better rest and support while ensuring that their academic and professional responsibilities are effectively managed.
