Telugu actress Ashu Reddy (Venkata Ashwini Reddy) has faced a significant setback in the Telangana High Court regarding a criminal case filed against her for allegedly cheating an NRI businessman under the pretext of marriage. The court outrightly refused to grant any interim orders to quash the FIR or halt the ongoing investigation against her and her mother, Yashoda Reddy. Furthermore, the judge dismissed their plea seeking an exemption from any coercive legal action by the authorities.
During the case hearing presided over by Justice J. Srinivasa Rao, the legal counsel representing Ashu Reddy argued that the police had registered the case based on false allegations and requested a stay on the probe. Countering this, the public prosecutor informed the court that there is substantial evidence to proceed with the case, highlighting that massive online transactions amounting to Rs 10.5 crore had taken place between the parties. The prosecutor also noted that the police have already issued Section 41A notices to the petitioner to continue the formal investigation.
The controversy stems from a complaint filed with the Hyderabad Central Crime Station (CCS) police by a local businessman, Y. Satyanarayana Murthy. He alleged that Ashu Reddy and her mother collected vast sums of money by falsely promising that the actress would marry his London-based son, Y.V. Dharmendra. After listening to the arguments from both sides, the judge declined to pause the investigation, directed the respondents to file their counter-affidavits, and postponed the next hearing of the case to June 9.
