Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Kolkata this Friday to oversee the selection of West Bengal’s next Chief Minister as the BJP prepares to form its first-ever government in the state. Shah will chair a crucial meeting with the newly elected MLAs to finalize the leader of the legislative party, who will then be officially designated as the CM-elect. This move follows the formal dissolution of the 17th West Bengal Legislative Assembly by the Governor on May 7, which has paved the way for the new administration to take charge.
While the constitutional transition is in full swing, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has drawn attention by continuing to list her designation as “Chief Minister of West Bengal” on her official social media handles, including Facebook, Instagram, and X. Despite the assembly’s dissolution and the election outcome, her digital profiles have not yet been updated to reflect the change in status. This has become a point of discussion in political circles as the state moves toward a significant shift in leadership.
The election data from the Bhabanipur constituency has highlighted a particularly striking detail regarding Mamata Banerjee’s defeat. She lost her home seat to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari by a margin of 15,105 votes. However, reports indicate that the number of voters deleted from the rolls in Bhabanipur stood at 45,240—a figure three times larger than the margin of her loss. This discrepancy between the margin of defeat and the volume of voter deletions has added a layer of intensity to the post-election narrative in the state.
