Iran Attaches Great Importance to Ties with India: FM Araghchi Following BRICS Meeting

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi emphasized on Friday that Tehran places significant value on its strategic relationship with India. Speaking to the media after the conclusion of the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, Araghchi highlighted that both nations share common concerns and interests regarding the stability of the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. He expressed a strong determination to continue the coordination between Tehran and New Delhi to navigate the “complicated” security situation in West Asia.

During his visit, Araghchi held high-level discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a lengthy meeting with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The leaders reviewed a wide spectrum of bilateral and regional issues, with a specific focus on ensuring the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz. Araghchi noted that India and Iran share “more or less similar positions” on regional security and vowed to maintain close political consultations to benefit both nations based on mutual respect and ancient civilizational ties.

The Iranian Foreign Minister also expressed deep gratitude to the Indian government for its solidarity and humanitarian assistance following recent acts of “unprovoked aggression” against Iran. He criticized the timing of these attacks, noting they occurred in the midst of diplomatic negotiations. Praising the successful organization of the BRICS meeting, Araghchi reaffirmed that Iran is committed to expanding trade and economic cooperation with India, viewing the partnership as a cornerstone for stability in the region.
