Tamil Nadu’s newly elected Chief Minister, Joseph Vijay, who recently transitioned from a stellar cinematic career to a dominant political one, continues to make headlines for his governance and past actions. While his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), secured a significant victory in the elections, a tragic event from his pre-election journey remains a somber memory. In September last year, a political rally in Karur led by Vijay resulted in a horrific stampede that claimed 41 lives. In a recent interaction with the media, the mother of a young girl who died in that incident shared a touching account of Vijay’s visit to her home.
The woman revealed that Vijay was deeply moved by the tragedy and could not hold back his tears upon visiting her. “He fell at my feet and asked for forgiveness,” she told BBC, recalling how the leader was visibly distraught by the loss of life. During his meeting with the victims’ families—many of whom he met at a resort in Mahabalipuram to avoid further public chaos—Vijay provided financial assistance of ₹20 lakhs to each affected family. He promised to stand by them and stated that his entire reason for entering politics was to bring about a meaningful change in the state.
Since taking oath as Chief Minister, Vijay has initiated several bold reforms, including the closure of liquor shops near schools and places of worship, and increasing the Dearness Allowance (DA) for state government employees from 58% to 60%. Despite some initial controversies regarding administrative appointments, his commitment to his promises has earned him the trust of many. The bereaved mother expressed her faith in his leadership, stating, “He kept his word and gave us courage. We voted for him because we believe in the change he promised. If he transforms the state as he said he would, we will be truly happy.”
The Karur stampede, caused by a massive turnout in a confined space, remains one of the most tragic incidents in recent Tamil Nadu political history. However, Vijay’s personal outreach and emotional transparency in the aftermath appear to have resonated deeply with the affected families, turning a moment of immense criticism into a testament to his perceived character as a leader.
