Brutal Crime and Stringent Judiciary Response:
In a landmark judgment, a POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) court in Tamil Nadu has sentenced a man to a double death penalty for the brutal rape and murder of a Class 12 schoolgirl. The convict, identified as Dharma Muneeswaran, committed the heinous crime against the minor girl belonging to the Vilathikulam region. The court categorized the offense as one of the “rarest of rare cases” due to the extreme barbarity and cruelty inflicted upon the victim. The judiciary emphasized that such severe punishment is necessary to deter horrific crimes against children and uphold public safety.
Case Background and Police Negligence:
The tragic incident dates back to March 10, when the 12th-grade student residing in Vedanatham village near Vilathikulam went missing in the evening. Although the worried parents immediately filed a missing person report at the local police station, they alleged that the police failed to act promptly. The next day, the girl’s body was discovered with severe injuries in the dense forest area of Vedanatham. Following public outrage and protests over early police inaction, higher authorities took disciplinary action and suspended the local police inspector for negligence.
Arrest of the Serial Offender via CCTV:
With the investigation intensifying, a special police team scanned regional surveillance cameras and successfully tracked down and arrested Dharma Muneeswaran on March 19 using critical CCTV footage. Subsequent police interrogation exposed a terrifying criminal past; the accused was a serial offender who had previously faced charges for sexually assaulting an elderly woman. Alarmingly, at the time of committing this horrific crime against the schoolgirl, he was out on bail. The court took his dangerous criminal history into account before passing the historic double death sentence.
