High-Voltage Political Drama in Tamil Nadu:
Just days after the newly elected Tamil Nadu assembly members took their official oaths, a major political tremor shook the state’s opposition camp. Three prominent AIADMK legislators abruptly resigned from their posts, dealing a severe blow to the party which is already struggling with consecutive electoral defeats. Lashing out at the newly formed government, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Joseph Vijay. EPS mockingly questioned whether poaching opposition MLAs in a cinematic, “Pushpa” movie style qualifies as honest politics, asserting that the public will soon teach a fitting lesson to those using short-lived film glamour to run the administration.
Ground Floor Resignation, First Floor Defection:
Expressing deep rage over the swift chain of events, EPS accused CM Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), of buying public representatives like cattle in a market. He pointed out the sheer orchestration behind the moves, claiming that the lawmakers were made to submit their resignations on the ground floor of the assembly complex and were immediately draped with TVK party shawls on the first floor. The high-profile resignations include Sathyabhama (Dharapuram MLA), Maragatham Kumaravel (Madhurantakam MLA), and Jayakumar (Perundurai MLA). Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar swiftly accepted their handwritten letters, clarifying that since the MLAs approached him personally and fulfilled legal criteria, an immediate decision was made without the need for a prolonged inquiry.
Rebel Camp Dynamics and Upcoming By-Elections:
The three resigning MLAs were notably part of the internal AIADMK rebel faction led by senior leaders CV Shanmugam and SP Velumani, which had previously defied the party line to back CM Vijay’s government during the crucial assembly trust vote. Immediately after exiting the Speaker’s chamber, the trio met with TVK Minister Aadhav Arjuna, adding immense fuel to the ongoing defection rumors. When questioned about the legal status of the remaining 25 AIADMK rebel MLAs who voted in favor of TVK despite a party whip, the Speaker stated that all petitions are currently under technical review and an official ruling will be announced at an appropriate time. Meanwhile, by-elections are now looming on the horizon for these three seats alongside the Trichy East constituency.
