The Congress high command is shifts its focus towards strengthening its base in Andhra Pradesh, the only southern state where the party currently lacks a strong foothold compared to its presence in Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. To rejuvenate the state’s party cadre and instill fresh confidence, the leadership plans to utilize the ongoing Rajya Sabha elections. APCC Chief YS Sharmila has emerged as the frontrunner for this crucial opportunity, as the party prefers a dynamic and highly active leader over veterans like KVP Ramachandra Rao or Raghuveera Reddy, considering future electoral prospects and political visibility.
Since Congress lacks the required numbers in Andhra Pradesh, YS Sharmila is highly likely to be accommodated through Karnataka, where four Rajya Sabha seats are up for election. Out of these four, Congress is set to comfortably win three seats. While one seat is officially reserved for AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, the party high command intends to allot one of the remaining two seats to YS Sharmila. Her recent high-profile meeting with Rahul Gandhi in Delhi, combined with former Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah’s explicit refusal to transition to the Rajya Sabha, has further solidified her chances before the June 8 nomination deadline.
The top leadership of the Gandhi family—including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi—is entirely supportive of Sharmila’s candidature. Following YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s departure years ago, the traditional Congress vote bank in AP largely shifted to the YSRCP; the high command now views Sharmila as the perfect catalyst to reclaim YSR’s loyal legacy and bring back his supporters to the Congress fold. Furthermore, Sharmila enjoys highly cordial relations with Karnataka’s top leaders, Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar, and even Telangana CM Revanth Reddy reportedly supports her over other veteran politicians. Reclaiming traditional voter loyalty and managing internal state politics remain significant tasks, but Sharmila stands out as the most popular leader to spearhead the party’s resurgence in Andhra Pradesh.
